Personality

❝ I am but a young girl and know little of the ways of war. ❞

Though she wasn't raised in King's Landing or brought up in a traditional setting for a princess, it is clear that Daenerys was born to be a great ruler. It is said that Targaryens are either born to greatness or madness, and while her brother Viserys seems to have fallen prey to the madness, she seems to have dodged that particular curse. Level-headed and commanding, she gives people hope and gets loyalty almost wherever she goes. As a queen, she is a good mix of proud, noble, and compassionate. It is more than clear that her kindness is her strongest trait (perhaps even to the point where it brings about some detrimental decisions) and despite her insistence that her heart is not too soft, there are several occurrences where Daenerys' compassion sets them back further on her mission to take back the Iron Throne.

She is also headstrong, more stubborn than she has any right to be. Yes, she has lived through a lot. Despite her young age she has married, and she has been with child. She has watched her brother die, watched her husband die, and lost that child before she even had the chance to so much as hear his first cries. She has spent most of her life running from an unseen threat, and survived several assassination attempts. There is no denying that Daenerys has lived through a lot - and these experiences have not only hardened her heart but made her much wiser for it - but not so wise that she doesn't make mistakes. She is still young enough that her emotions rule over in favour of logic more often than not. It is because of her anger and hurt that she sends Ser Barristan and Ser Jorah into the sewers of Meereen, half-hoping that they would die down there and save her having to judge them accordingly. She almost risked taking the city of Meereen because of the betrayals that she suffered. Then there's Daario, the sellsword who her feelings for are clearly less than platonic. Ultimately she makes what she assumes to be the right decision, choosing Meereen and her people over the man whom she cannot trust, but it is a long and difficult decision with a lot of angst.

She inspires, more than anything. Daenerys is not without her enemies - both in Westeros and in the East, but for every time she has made an enemy, she has found someone who will support her. The Dothraki follow her across the sea because they believe in Daenerys and her dragons, and her ability to rule. The Unsullied follow Daenerys even after she frees them, believing in her kindness and compassion as much as her ability to lead them to victory. With each city she visits she finds new people to bring along to her cause - and it is this as much as anything that bring about her enemies too. She tries to take on the whole of the slave trade in the East, despite it not being her end goal of Kings Landing. It is ambitious - too ambitious - but she cannot bring herself to leave these cities the way she left Astapor. It takes a while for her to recognise this, it takes Astapor falling and returning back to the slave trade and destruction for her to realise that she needs to learn how to really rule, not just win the war against them. Ultimately, she makes many mistakes - the worst of which are yet to come, but her faults are as much her strengths as they are her weaknesses.
